Baby Dolls

Remember, the road to happiness might just be paved with tiny plastic shoes…

About

Bold, graphic, and colorful, Simmons’ works flirt with Warhol’s elevation and Koons’ recreation of the ‘readymade’ by reworking and embellishing Barbie shoes from her childhood collection and repainted pill bottles from her medicine cabinet. This draws attention to the interesting parallel between both the doll shoes and generic drugs mass produced in China and India that often have negative and overlooked side effects.

The stickers on each piece mimic the familiar yellow warning labels included on many prescription bottles today, reading “may cause drowsiness/do not operate heavy machinery.” ‘Baby Dolls’ convey a desire for transformation, and whether it be through drugs or shoes, both alter the body and mindset of their consumers.
