Born in 1989 in New York City, Kristin Simmons is a painter, printmaker, and silkscreen artist with a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Columbia University. She is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Orra White Hitchcock and National Endowment of the Arts Award.
Having grown up in New York City, Simmons draws major inspiration from her experience of the urban landscape, translating what she sees into work that is eye-catching, playful and polemical. Simmons uses the internet, books and pop culture to appropriate source images for her work before blending these images with childhood toys and objects in her studio. Combining humorous, satirical slogans with her own painterly renditions, the artist first gained a devoted audience through sharing her work and interpretive custom board games on her Instagram feed @kristinsimmonsart.
For the EVGB piece, “Sleep, Observe, Create: Art is Real Estate” Simmons re-interpreted the roof and amenities deck into a board-game grid that encourages viewers to explore and navigate the roof footprint as a model that encourages relaxation, rejuvenation, and creative stimulation. Bold, graphic and colorful, Simmons uses objects and abstract symbols from found materials in the immediate neighborhood to create a narrative about the community space.
